The below maps are Tactical VFR charts that were used by Jim McDaniel during his second tour in Vietnam in 1971, when he was stationed in Chu Lai with the 116th AHC Hornets. The two Americal Division Area of Operations (AO) maps include the entire Division's AO and then some, from Da Nang in the north to the southern end of I Corps at FSB Thunder, then continues south to Qui Nhon and Tuy Hoa. These are the actual maps Jim used for "cross-country" flights. He used smaller scale tactical maps (more detailed) when flying to field sites. The red markings in the Americal AO were put on the maps by Jim in 1971 when he used them. These maps do not include all of the LZ's and Fire Support Bases in the Americal AO, but it does include many of the larger ones. The Lam Son 719 map covers the entire AO of the South Vietnamese invasion into Laos in 1971. See the 1971 History/photos page for more information on Lam Son 719 action.Map Coordinates of Hundreds of LZ's and FSB's. Link to Les Hines' work on the Americal Home Page.
