Bringing One Home

Here a CH-47 Chinook brings back a UH-1D slick from the field. Although it's difficult to see the details, note all the 55-gallon barrels below the aircraft. These were filled with sand and topped with several layers of filled sandbags and arranged to make revetments to park the aircraft in. In many cases these revetments significantly reduced shrapnal damage to aircraft during mortar and rocket attacks. The Chinook appears to be getting ready to set down the UH-1 on the parking ramp at Lane. (Photo by Ted Saunders, Lane AHP, 1966)
